Devlog #3 – Back from the Void
Okay… so… it’s been a while. Like, over-a-year-a-while. Sorry about that. As some wise gamedev once said: you can either make a game or make devlogs… not both. I’ve been busy picking the first option.
But good news! Oni Hunters is very much alive, chugging along, and actually getting ready for October’s Steam Next Fest. That means all my free time is currently going into cramming as much content as possible into the next demo without my brain melting. (Wish me luck.)
From Minimon to Oni Hunters
This whole thing actually started as “just” a remake of my old game Minimon. Then I changed a system here… rewrote a map there… added a few new monsters… and suddenly I realized: “Yeah, this isn’t a remake anymore.”
What we have now is basically a brand-new series, with Minimon characters popping in as cameos and cheeky nods for fans of the originals. Yes, the popular Draky monster is back, along with Firago, Thundago, and a few new troublemakers like Bloodago. And yes, some characters from Minimon 2D and Minimon 3D have shown up as participants in the Monster Jubilee.
The Monster Jubilee
Remember how Minimon was eight arenas and badges? Yeah… no. That’s gone, this is not Pokemon from Wish anymore.
Now the big event is The Monster Jubilee... a once-every-50-years festival where the best tamers in the world compete to reach the island of Galatea and collect as many Duel Cards as they can along the way.
How many Duel Cards? Think of a regular playing card deck for a ballpark idea, then double it, because in Gironia they have their own 5-suit original do not steal card deck.
The fun part? You don’t have to get them all. Some are won in battles, others in puzzles, and a few in… let’s just call them “experimental challenges” and leave it at that. Pick your favorites and skip the ones you don’t vibe with.
The Numbers
-
Types: 16 (RIP Wax Type... you will be missed. Welcome, mysterious new type that replaces it!)
-
Monsters: 258 total (16 of each type, plus one final boss and one secret boss)
-
Locations: 180 total (14 towns, 70 dungeons, and plenty of other spots to poke around in)
-
Duel Cards: 100 total
Why So Many Dungeons?
Because they’re fun.
Also because Oni Hunters is all about exploration and player choice. You can stick to the main road if you want, but if you wander off into a dungeon you might find legendary monsters, rare loot, or a bizarre side story you’ll be telling your friends about later. Most dungeons are optiona.... so they’re basically there to tempt you.
The Steam Next Fest demo will be the first big public test of Oni Hunters in its new, fully-evolved form. Can’t wait to see which paths you take through Gironia.
Next devlog: details on the demo itself.
Until then, I’ll be in the code mines.
PS: Remember that those in the Oni Hunters Discord will always have early access to demos and other insider info.
And if you did not wishlist Oni Hunters on Steam yet, what are you waiting for, do it right now here!
